Perihelion, Bird Day, Twelfth Night, Whipped Cream Day, more

January 5th, 2012, is Perihelion, National Bird Day, Twelfth Night, George Washington Carver Day, Asarah B'Tevet, Guru Govind Singh Jayanti, and National Whipped Cream Day.

At 0100 UT on January 5th, our planet is at Perihelion. the moment when Earth is closest to the sun.

National Bird Day is a time to appreciate birds, whether in the wild or as valued members of your family.

Twelfth Night marks the final night of the Christmas season. It is the night before Twelfth Day, known as Epiphany. Some say now is the time to put away the holiday decorations.

George Washington Carver Day, the anniversary of Carver's death in 1943, honors the "Wizard of Tuskegee" who found many new uses for peanuts and other everyday items.

Asarah B'Tevet is a minor fast day in the Hebrew Calendar, observed on the tenth day of the month of Tevet. This feast day occurs twice in 2012 - January 5th and December 23rd.

Guru Govind Singh Jayanti is a celebration of the birth of the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh.

National Whipped Cream Day commemorates the birth date of Reddi-wip founder, Aaron "Bunny" Lapin. Some activists criticize this holiday for promoting opulence when many in the world are malnourished, but the same could be said of any extravagance, from fancy restaurants to luxury cars to designer gowns. Whipped cream shouldn't be singled out.
